Notes for Axel Mowat Admiral
"Sunnhordland-Slekter" by Erik Bakkevig, 1941. Axel Mowat, Hovland, born 1592. He was a navy officer, (captain) in 1628 on several war ships and in 1631 became Vice Admiral. When illness forced him to leave the sea, he settled in Hovland. Axel was the biggest land owner in Western Norway. He inherited Hovland from his father and Seim from his mother besides many other farms. By 1648, he owned the following manors (estates): Hovland, Onarheim, Gjersvik and Malkenes at Tsynes: Hatteberg, Mel and Seim in Kvinnherad: Ask on Askoy and Axelvold in Lindas (now called Fonnes). A year later he also had the use of Haaland and Amland, mortgaged by Christopher Orning. Besides all that, he had property in Strandebarm, Skanevik, Fjelberg, Etne, Os and Hardanger.
About 1620 Axel Mowat was the father of an illegitimate son- Anders, by Marrethe Eriksdtr. About 1625 he married Karen Bildt, daughter of Knut Bildt, and wife Sidsel Brun. Axel died 27 January 1661 and his wife in 1662 in Bergen. Their bodies were brought to Hovland but later moved to the baronial burial chapel by the church in Rosendal.
